![]() ![]() Years ago, JavaScript developers that wanted to build for iOS and Android were forced to learn completely new languages and development approaches. For now let’s first take a look at how JavaScript-driven native frameworks like NativeScript and React Native work. Running on the web brings a ton of advantages as well, of course, and we’ll discuss all of this in more detail when we compare PWAs with JavaScript-driven native approaches momentarily. At the end of the day PWAs are web apps, and as such, they are subject to the same limitations as any web app-such as having limited device API access, and having performance characteristics that are very reliant on the browser they’re running in. ![]() For example the e-commerce site AliExpress saw a 82% increase in iOS conversion rates with their PWA.Ī Google case study showing how the site AliExpress improved their conversation rates with a PWA-even on iOS.īut despite being a well designed technology, PWAs are not the solution for all mobile needs. In fact, many companies saw increased 2017 iOS conversion rates by rethinking their mobile experiences using a Progressive Web App. Yet, despite the lack of iOS support for years, PWAs have been able to succeed where many similar technologies have failed because their APIs degrade gracefully. NOTE: Apple recently announced plans to ship support for service workers and web app manifests as part of an the upcoming iOS 11.3 release □. This design has been key to the success of PWAs, as iOS-aka the second biggest mobile platform out there-did not support service workers or web app manifest for the years PWAs surged in popularity. ![]() Meaning, you can start using service workers and manifest files for browsers that support the APIs today, and not worry about breaking your app in browsers that do not yet have support for these features. One reason is the design of the Progressive Web App APIs themselves, as the two primary technologies behind PWAs-service workers and web app manifest files-were designed with graceful degradation in mind. Why have PWAs been so successful when many other attempts to make the mobile web more like native apps have failed? The Twitter Lite case study from Īnd the India-based e-commerce site Flipkart was able to increase its new customer acquisition by 50% using a PWA. As the stats show, many of these companies have not only improved performance metrics like load time, but also business-centric metrics like engagement and customer acquisition rates.įor example, Twitter found that users sent out 75% more tweets when they upgraded their web app to a PWA. The site includes an impressive list of case studies from companies that have switched to Progressive Web Apps. Push notifications-PWAs give web apps the opportunity to send push notifications, even when the web app is not being actively viewed.Offline-PWAs work offline by default, and can employ advanced caching strategies.Home screen placement-PWAs can appear on the user’s home screen, just like native mobile applications do.Why all the hype? PWAs open the door to a lot of really useful functionality for web apps, including the following. The conference had four PWA-related talks on day 1. Snippets from the Chrome Developer Summit schedule. It’s hard to attend a JavaScript conference without accidentally attending a few talks on PWAs. The PWA initiative has received a lot of attention in the JavaScript community in the last year, as Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla have all been pushing the technology heavily through their respective channels. Through a series of new APIs and development guidelines, PWAs attempt to make mobile web apps feel a lot more like natively installed applications. Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) represent a new way to approach mobile web development. Let’s start the conversation by looking at Progressive Web Apps. We’ll start by discussing the Progressive Web App and the JavaScript-driven native approaches in detail, and move on to give some clear guidelines on when each approach makes sense. TIP: If you're curious to read more about the future of JavaScript, be sure to check out our new whitepaper on the topic, The Future of JavaScript: 2018 and Beyond. We get a lot of requests to compare these two approaches to application development, so that will be the focus of this article. Here at Progress, the two biggest approaches we see as on the rise are Progressive Web Apps and JavaScript-driven native frameworks like NativeScript and React Native. You can build for the web with a Progressive Web App, build a hybrid app using Cordova, build native iOS and Android apps using frameworks like NativeScript or React Native, or choose some combination of all of these things. If you are a JavaScript developer, you have never had more options for building mobile apps. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you have existing DDI metadata in XML format and you want to display it as a readable codebook in PDF or HTML format, you can use existing DDI style sheets to do so.ĭDI-Lifecycle Version 3.1 Converter (using XSLT Stylesheets)Ĭonvert DD 3.1 XML to MARC-XML, DDI-Codebook XML, DataCite 2.A codebook is a type of document used for gathering and storing codes. Note that these tools provide only the metadata carried in the statistical packages and not the actual data. ![]() Tip: If you have data in SPSS, SAS, or Stata format and want to produce DDI from those packages, there are tools to help you. There are a number of tools that can create DDI for the creation of a structured codebook. A DDI codebook provides metadata about a dataset and enables application tools to read the data appropriately for display and to do further statistical analysis. Scenario: “I have a complete dataset and I would like to create a codebook”Ī codebook is an accompanying document to assist in interpreting the data for replication and reuse purposes by an end-user. Once you establish a workflow for codebook creation, you can easily attach codebooks to your published datasets in any data repository. These files were generated using the DDI-Codebook standard, and were marked up using Nesstar Publisher.Īdditional codebook examples using ICPSR data are also available for review. This is the same codebook in machine-actionable DDI format (XML format). Here is an example of a readable codebook in PDF format. Tip: Don’t worry if you don’t currently have any DDI or structured metadata to work with, as there are a number of tools that you can use to extract file- and variable-level metadata (such as the variable names, labels, categories, values, frequency counts, etc.) found in your completed dataset. (See the DDI Glossary for more information about study-level and variable-level metadata.) Information can sometimes be provided by a researcher in a readme file (e.g., a text file), or be embedded in a datafile package (e.g., SPSS allows for column names / labels / missing values / notes), and so on. To create a codebook, information about the study, files, and variables must be known. A codebook provides authoritative (straight-from-the-research) and citable information, as well as instructions on how to read, analyze, interpret, and verify data for accuracy and replication purposes. Why a Codebook?Ĭreating a readable codebook to accompany your dataset can go a long way in making your data well understood and reusable well into the future. When captured using the DDI metadata standard, information in a codebook is structured, machine-actionable, and usable by computer software and databases. The codebook may include a dataset’s record layout, list of variable names and labels, concepts, categories, cases, missing value codes, frequency counts, notes, universe statements, and so on. A codebook is an essential document that informs the data user about the study, data file(s), variables, categories, etc., that make up a complete dataset. ![]() ![]() ![]() See more ideas about pony, my little pony, towns. ![]() ![]() The GPIO pins can draw 50mA safely, distributed across all the pins an individual GPIO pin can only safely draw 16mA… Check the power rating of the devices you plan to connect to the Pi and purchase a power supply accordingly. “The power requirements of the Raspberry Pi increase as you make use of the various interfaces on the Raspberry Pi. The 4B means your DAC choices are almost unlimited, as well as being faster to use and more future proof. Unless you are going to use a very air-flow restricted case, overheating shouldn’t be an issue, and adding a powered fan is an option (although this adds noise as well). The 4B model is about twice as expensive as the sub-$50 Pi 3B and 3B+ versions, but the improved speed and unrestricted bandwidth make the 4B this model of choice. While the 3B may be sufficient to run a network streamer device, the lower clock speed likely slows down the software and extends boot times. More on this later.Īlthough the 3B has the lowest power consumption of all the models, meaning it generates less heat, creates less thermal noise, and has the least chance of overheating, I don’t believe these benefits present a compelling argument to use this version. Clever folks worked around this limitation by designing separate DAC boards (HATs) that bypass the USB connection and connect via the 40-pin GPIO header on the Pi board. This combined controller restricts the bandwidth for USB-based DAC connections (to external DACs) and the Ethernet throughput. Pi Versionġ.2 GHz 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processorģ00Mbit/sec limited by shared USB 2.0 connectionīefore the 4B version, using a Pi as a network streamer was primarily limited by the shared Ethernet and USB controller. For the sake of this discussion, we only need to concern ourselves with the most recent Pi models. The Pi’s claim to fame is, of course, inexpensive and flexible open-sourced computing power. Each revision is more powerful than the previous but shares the same basic shape and size. There have been several Raspberry Pi revisions over the last few years. There are four main hardware components in a Pi-based network streamer: ![]() Build 2 does not include an internal DAC. Componentīuild 1 (left) contains an internal DAC so output analog RCA sockets were added to the rear cover. Build 1 (left) and Build 2 (right) with the Topping D10s DAC and xDuoo XD05 Plus DAC/amp.īuild 1 contains an internal DAC board but the slower Pi 3B+, while Build 2 does not include a DAC in the price (it requires an external USB DAC) and is based on the faster Pi 4B. These are fully functional and complete music streamers, but offer different options based on whether you already own an external USB DAC. I put together two recommended builds that are both priced around $250. The great thing about a Pi-based device is that you’ve got SO MANY options and choices to make every step of the way, and the end product can be significantly different for each builder. Your list of acceptable compromises is likely quite different than my own. Throughout this guide, I’ll explain what (and why) I selected for my own build, and I’ll also provide available options for you to make your own purchase decisions. I tried to select high-quality components firmly situated in the bang-for-the-buck category. With champagne tastes and my (cheap) beer budget firmly in mind, my frugality-fueled motivation was to see how fully-featured and high-fidelity a product I could create for the least amount of money possible. And the price CAN be far less than a finished commercial product with similar features and sound quality. It’s the ultimate DIY device, allowing the average tinkerer to select components and easily combine them into a custom product. Rather than using a multi-purpose, complicated, and inherently noisy computer to serve up digital music files, a Pi streamer can offer a streamlined and straightforward solution. Many compelling aspects of a Pi-based streamer became apparent when using the Streamer Ultra. My biggest takeaway from using a commercial Pi-based network music streamer was that I could build one myself! While I appreciated the device’s idea and sound quality, I struggled to justify the price and the compromises made in convenience and features. I recently reviewed the Orchard Audio PecanPi Streamer Ultra, a Raspberry Pi-based network music streamer device with an integrated touchscreen. I purchased all the components used in this guide. ![]() |
